History & Legacy
Perched among the whispering pines and quiet grandeur of Solan lies a story generations in the making. It begins in 1855 with the founding of the Solan Brewery by the British, a cornerstone of India’s early brewing tradition and home to its prized Lion Beer.
A century later, in the wake of Partition, our family took stewardship of this storied establishment, under whose banner some of India’s most iconic spirits were shaped — including Old Monk, the country’s most beloved rum, and Golden Eagle, one of its earliest and most enduring lagers.
In 1973, we began not only to preserve this legacy but to shape its future. This gave rise to what would become Mount Shivalik Breweries. Building upon the rich heritage of Solan Brewery, we introduced bold ideas and new products that left a lasting mark on Indian brewing. Among them was Thunderbolt, launched in the 1980s — India’s first super-strong beer, which quickly rose to category leadership across several states. Our journey also included collaborations with global brewing giants such as Stroh’s, Kirin, and Cobra, reflecting our ongoing commitment to quality and progress.
Yet through all the growth and transformation, the hills were never far. Their quiet pull lingered — steady, familiar, and deeply rooted — calling us home once more.
The Shivalik hills, serene and steadfast, have always been more than a backdrop. They are part of our identity. And as time unfolded, so too did a deeper calling: to return. To build not only upon the land we knew, but upon the values that shaped us.
This vision led to the creation of Mount Shivalik Holdings, the property development arm of our group, and with it, our flagship project: The Viceroy Estate.
